A constant mist that reaches as high as 800 metres creates a mystical feel to Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most revered natural attractions. This mist is often viewed by people situated miles from the attraction. Those visiting the falls during an evening lit by a full moon usually get to experience a magical moonbow, which is similar to the rainbows that make their appearances during sunlit hours.
Victoria Falls straddles two countries, Zambia and Zimbabwe. This is similar to the only waterfalls that come close to the incredible stature of this one: Niagara Falls, which is located in the United States and Canada, and Iguazu Falls, which straddles Argentina and Brazil. Eyes have to look afar to view Victoria Falls from one end to the other as its width is an incredible 1,708 metres. It is also more than twice as high as Niagara Falls at 108 metres.
Many of those visiting Victoria Falls incorporate scenic rail journeys into their trips. Trains regularly depart South Africa and head on a route that is part of a planned and nearly completed rail connection between Egypt and South Africa. Overnight trains to this attraction also depart Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, every evening. The rustic cars used on this route date to the 1950s.
Thrill seekers who visit the picturesque Victoria Falls during the dry season that lasts from September and December head straight for Devil’s Pool near Livingstone Island. This heart-pounding destination provides a delicious taste of life on the edge. In fact, many of those simply looking at photos of people in Devil’s Pool may feel their hearts pounding through their chests. The area is safe during this time period because of a rock barrier that exists a short distance below the water’s surface right before the water cascades over the falls.
Obviously, the major focus for many at Victoria Falls is looking at the falls from a variety of angles. However, there are several other activities that may be enjoyed here. These include canoeing above the falls, a relaxing experience, or white water rafting below them, a much more exhilarating experience. Activities such as bungee jumping and rappelling may also be done from the nearby Victoria Falls Bridge.
There are two small national parks located at the falls. A wildlife area teeming with animals is situated in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia, and Victoria Falls National Park in Zimbabwe is home to an impressive variety of wildlife in its rainforest. The larger Lower Zambezi National Park, a pristine wilderness area, is also situated nearby, about 100 kilometres downstream from Victoria Falls.
Best Time To Visit:
It is magical to hear the roar of Victoria Falls and view a tremendous amount of water cascading over the edge when visits are made during the flood season that lasts from February to May. This follows the Zambezi River’s wet season that runs from November to April. The most impressive volume of water is visible in April.
However, the dry season creates some absolutely beautiful views as well. This lasts from September to January and peaks in November. The flow of water at this time is about 10 percent of the water flow that occurs in April. Some parts of the face of the falls dry out completely in and around November, allowing visitors to view the spectacular rocks that are completely hidden during the wet season. The view at this time is also usually not blocked by the significant amount of mist that exists here during the wet season.
